I've played Explorers many times since it came out, but only completed the post game four times. Once as an umbreon, once as Tala (2014), and twice as a turtwig more recently (2019 and 2024-2026). Family tree is inspired by my most recent playthrough with Wapiti.
I headcanon that the Explorers heroes are quiet and rarely talk. The partner in these games learns how to read subtle cues, which the rest of the Guild picks up quickly because Croagunk is similarly quiet. The hero, Croagunk, Chimecho, and Sunflora sometimes go gardening together.
Another headcanon is that the hero has a fear of the ocean. There is an appreciation, especially with the beach, but it doesn't take away the memories of a near-death experience. Dugtrio, who enjoys speaking to the sea, bonds with the hero and helps the hero overcome that fear before the ending to the main story.
No matter how the playthrough goes, whether it be platonic, queerplatonic, or romantic, the hero and partner hold an incredible bond.
